AveburyNow here’s a fascinating little snippet for you...
Stones
Firstly, it took centuries to build. It’s estimated from 2850 to 2200 BC.
The inner ring originally consisted of 100 stones, whilst the outer ring was made up of 30 stones which form a circle of 1088 feet in diameter. This makes it the largest stone circle in Britain.
Like Stonehenge, the ‘How?’ Is a logical question. Some of the stones are 40 tonnes! They vary in height from 12 to 18 feet tall.
The real purpose of the site will never be known. Seasonal feasting, worship, or homage to nature and or the Gods, or a combination of all.
Whatever the stones purpose, it was of such importance to the people of that time, that there generation after generations for hundreds of years continued to work on it.
 The Stone Circle
The world, her mother, and her familiars have all heard of Stonehenge (quite rightly too). However, less than an hour away from its world famous Neolithic counterpart is Avebury Henge.
It’s actually one of the four ‘super’ henge's in the UK that we know of (more on them and henge's in future editions).
The Avebury Stone Circle became a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
Avebury receives not a jot of the publicity that is enjoyed by Stonehenge but is nonetheless a major Neolithic monument.
Here’s a few simple bits of info that will drive you to jump in your car and see it for yourself.
