Peeps born during the month of April, have the most absolutely sought-after gemstone of all as their birthstone, the fabulous Diamond!
First, let’s do the history bit. The word Diamond comes from an ancient Greek word adámas, (pronounced adiamas) which meant, invincible, unbreakable, and or unchangeable.
Whilst geophysics is well beyond us simple village folk, we can understand that diamonds are formed by just one element (carbon) and are therefore the toughest of all gemstones.
Scientific types have somehow calculated that a Diamond is 58 times harder than anything else
stone-like in nature (wowzer!) and therefore it’s only possible to cut a Diamond with another Diamond.
Whilst it’s the norm to think of diamonds as being clear colourless stones there are also red, blue, green, and yes there are also yellow diamonds.
The rarity of diamonds and hence their value, has seen them used as a trading currency
(along with Gold and Silver) for well
over two thousand years.
Our ancestors were of the belief that diamonds were drops of lightning and that they had fallen from the sky and materialised here on Earth.
