Its very name conjures up images of sweeping meadows ablaze with the colours of a myriad of flowers in bloom.
There are 13 full moons in each lunar cycle.
Full Moon names frequently reflect the seasonal changes occurring at the time and the first full Moon of May is no different.
It would have been an important turning point for our ancestors, as it told them that summer is not far off. The long awaited warmth of the Sun is returning, and as if to mark the occasion, the flowers in the meadow have bloomed!
Full Moons were a way in which the passage of time could be measured - by literally counting them. The Flower full Moon was also significant as it told the farmers it was time to start planting crops ready for the summer and the eventual autumn harvest.
Hence, in many cultures, it was also referred to as the Planting full Moon.
We love this time of year for the sheer abundance of colour!
