As we see the world with twenty first century eyes, the homunculus of the Alchemist and the legend of the Jewish golem seem surreal. However, test tube babies made medical history in 1978, with the first baby conceived through the use of IVF, (in vitro fertilisation).
Gestating mammals outside of the womb is something that is happening now.
For instance, one group of Australian researchers successfully grew a lamb in an artificial womb for four weeks. Is the work of the Alchemist and myths of manmade golems so strange?
Modern man, with the technology he has created, will one day create life outside the human body. With gene therapy, stem cell research and designer babies, the world is simply catching up with the mind of the Alchemist. The Alchemist may have had some of the concepts ‘skew whiff’, but he was certainly on the right lines.
One day you may be able to grow your very own ‘tiny human’ in a bottle. The mere thoughts of that make me shudder!
