If it balances out or is lighter than the feather, they are allowed to pass to meet with Osiris to grant them passage to the afterlife. Thoth is the record keeper, recording the judgement.
The Book of the Dead proceeded to provide guidance to the ‘Field of Reeds’ and the dreaded Hraf-hef. The ferryman is essential for the journey to continue. A cruel character, who attempted to goad each passenger into anger with his vicious insults. To react to his wicked taunting would have resulted in the termination of the journey, as the task was to prove humility, patience, and kindness. The Book of the Dead revealed rituals and spells on how to do so.
By remaining calm, the offensive Hraf-hef was obliged to ferry his passenger across the ‘Field of Reeds’ to the shore and the awaiting afterlife.
Thus by burying a loved one with the ‘Book of the Dead’ the ancient Egyptians were enabling them to overcome the tasks that needed to be completed to reach the afterlife and join loved ones that had long since passed, in a prosperous and peaceful eternity.
We could write a very BIG book on the ‘Book of the Dead’ and its many versions and varying contents over the centuries, so clearly we can’t include it all here!
It’s a fascinating subject and if it tickles your history bits, it’s well worth giving it a google.
