order to deter a gang of axe-wielding Saxons from attacking your home.
However, as we all know, ‘protection’ refers not only to the physical. Make and use Black Salt if you sense the presence of spirits that are unwelcome or feel a dark negativity may be encroaching on your property.
You don’t have to wait until your senses tell you something is not right. Here at Flickering HQ we religiously prepare a shed load of Black Salt at the same time twice a year and sprinkle it around the perimeter and sleep all the better for it.
So let’s move on to the ‘how to’.
It’s really simple but as ever, we always say go with what you are comfortable with. Experiment and see what works best for you. There are no rules - except your rules.
This is a basic recipe - if you feel you need more power at your fingertips you can add a little hot chili powder. Just make sure you thoroughly wash those fingertips afterwards.
The basic recipe is
2 parts sea salt
1 part fine ash from your log fire pit OR 1 part scrapings from the bottom of your cast-iron cauldron OR
1 part very finely ground black pepper
You’ll find many variations online, but they don’t mention that the ingredients, in order to be really effective, should be a part of you and your home. So the sea salt and pepper, for example, should have been in your home for a few weeks.
Scrapings from your cauldron or ash from your home fire are, of course, ideal.
Do not add liquid food colouring as we have seen advised on some websites. In order to be effective, Black Salt must be a powder.
If the ash from your fire is too white or the scrapings from your cauldron are too oily, then simply add more powdered black pepper.
Note: If you’re looking to banish negative spirits, dress a black candle in your chosen oil and roll it in black salt, and then use it in your spell work.
Disposing of Black Salt
We’ve previously pointed out that Black Salt is a powerful ingredient for both protection and malicious intent.
It really isn’t an ingredient you want to keep around you once you’re done with it.
Don’t be misled by the simplicity of its ingredients. Take it as far away as you can from your home and either bury it near a crossroads, or a cemetery, or throw it into a flowing river or stream.
