Daddy's Little Monster
Written by Elisa M. Gray
Author of 'What Maketh The Witch?'
Wouldn’t it be great to have someone on hand to do little jobs for you when you had too much to do? A ‘little helper’ that answered to you and only you? The idea of the little helper is ancient, with notions of the witches familiar, living solely to do the witches bidding, the use of magical poppets as messengers to heal or harm over long distances and legends of the root of the Mandrake, used as an early poppet, stewed and strained, in strange and archaic rituals in an attempt to bring it to life.
The little helper was not just mere myth or legend at one time, in fact the creation of such a being was actually believed to be possible.
There are accounts in historical texts, from secret writings in Jewish Mythology concerning the golem, to the strange and scientific world of the alchemist and the creation of the homunculus.
The Jewish legend of the golem is concerned with the creation of a ‘little man’ believed to be done by using inanimate matter.
