became the solitary King Stone.
His knights who gathered in a circle to discuss the challenge became the Kings Men.
Prior to changing to an Elder tree, Mother Shipton found five of the Kings Knights who had not joined the circle and were in hushed tones plotting against the King. They became the ‘Whispering Knights’.
It’s a truly wonderful bit of folklore, and would have served as an explanation for the existence of the stones and their close proximity over many centuries.
So much about the stones cannot be explained. Why are these ancient monuments dating from significantly different eras so close to each other?
Clearly, the area was of great importance to our ancestors over a long period of time. but sadly, it seems we may never really know the reasons why.
